Meet The Team
Working at YPK means a lot to me as a place I can use all of my skills in education, HR and finance, so I was excited to join the team in 2023. I’m loving the team and community aspect of my new workplace after running my own bookkeeping business as a sole operator for five years! YPK is such a delightful place and the aspect of working in a community centre with embedded local connections is wonderful.

About Me
MELANIE HANDS

I was thrilled to join the team at YPK in 2023 as Teacher and Director. Community Kindy is a special place for teachers, children and families to grow together. My personal and professional passion revolves around social and emotional learning, child protection and instilling children with a strong sense of self.
I bring to my work with children a wide range of knowledge and experience of education in different settings - community/public health education, language teaching abroad in primary and high schools, corporate communications, and of course, being a mum!
I have three children who have all had the benefit of a great start at community kindys and this led me to narrow my teaching focus on the early years. Being part of a quality service is a privilege and I look forward to connecting with the wonderful YPK families each year.
About Me
THERESE TOMLIN
Teacher / Director (Magpies)
Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood); Grad. Dip Editing & Publishing; BA (Office Management)
I work with children because I value their unique thoughts, the genius of their play, their competence, and their constant surprises.
My strengths lie in the areas of the visual arts and music, and I have a particular fondness for quality children’s books. Inspired by the schools of Reggio Emilia, I believe that the children’s voices should be heard through all aspects of the learning spaces, so I am passionate about creating learning spaces to inspire children’s imaginations and strive to provide a kindergarten environment where children feel secure, safe, valued and respected.
Each child should have time to explore, create, and question the world in which they live. Supporting children on their learning journey is a great privilege. It is important to me to build strong relationships with family, so together we can strive to achieve their child’s goals.
“There are three teachers of children- adults, other children and their physical environment.” Loris Malaguzzi

When I’m not at the kindergarten you can find me walking my dog Lola, at the cinemas, reading, and spending time with my family and friends.
About Me
The children call me Kelli or Miss Kelli. I started teaching at YPK in 1987 (2024 is my 38th year!!) after two years teaching in a state preschool in Tin Can Bay.
I have seen many changes in education since I started teaching many years ago but the one thing that remains constant is that children will always need to feel SAFE, WELCOME, CARED FOR and VALUED before they can learn. Adults also need to value the child’s need for PLAY! I feel strongly about children being allowed to be children, to enjoy the natural world, to know how to relax and have some calm in their very busy lives.
I have two adult children, Dylan and Abby, as well as two very spoilt dogs; a Rottweiler called Tushka and a Groodle called Alaska. We spend our valuable down time doing what we love best which for Iggy is golf (yes I am a golf widow), and for me reading, painting and craft. I practice yoga too. We love to travel when possible - I think a trip back to Tassie is called for very soon!
About Me
KELLI BRIDGES
Teacher (Kookaburras)
Diploma of Teaching (Primary and Preschool)
I am a University-Trained Early Childhood Teacher with over ten years of experience working in various Early Childhood settings with children from birth – 6 years.

I joined the YPK team in 2023 and have worked in Teacher and Inclusion Support roles, however my connection with YPK started way back in 2008 when I had the great fortune to be placed here for my final teaching practicum under the guidance of two brilliant teachers, Kelli – current Kookaburras Teacher and Lynn – retiring Teacher after 26 years of service at YPK.

As a Kindy Teacher, it is my ambition to create a place where children feel loved, respected and connected. I believe that strong, positive relationships is critical in supporting children’s confidence so that they feel comfortable to fully explore and extend their skills and interests in a relaxed and supportive environment.
I am the proud Mum of two children, Zara and Henry.
